CANINE ASSOCIATION UGANDA

Our Committees

Meet the teams working behind the scenes to advance canine welfare, responsible breeding and canine sport in Uganda.

Working together for dogs in Uganda

Building a stronger canine community takes more than a shared love for dogs. It takes people, expertise, organisation and a commitment to doing things better.

At Canine Association Uganda (CAU), our work goes beyond registering dogs and organising shows. We are working to improve canine welfare, promote responsible breeding, develop training and canine sport, preserve Uganda's indigenous dog breeds, and bring together people who share a passion for dogs.

To achieve this, we operate through seven specialised committees, each responsible for a different area of the Association's work. Together, they turn our mission into practical activities that benefit dogs, their owners and the wider community.

Veterinary Health Committee

The Veterinary Health Committee supervises all CAU field activities to ensure that the health and well-being of dogs is everyone's priority. To this end, the Committee publishes periodic communications and educational materials regarding vaccination, health checks, surgical procedures, and elective procedures.

The Committee organises regular community clinics offering free vaccinations, neutering, and spaying for community dogs, and is responsible for the veterinary tent and microchipping at all CAU dog events. The Committee also delegates a member to the Kennel Inspection Team.

Science and Development Committee

The Committee is responsible for the preservation of Uganda's three national breeds: the Ugandan Hound, the Ugandan Herder, and the Ugandan Fluffy Dog.

The Committee oversees and confirms hip and elbow scores and gene testing reports.

Training, Judging, and Certification Committee

The Training, Judging, and Certification Committee is responsible for selecting judges for CAU's National Shows, approving judging requests from clubs and international events, setting the national judging exams, and issuing approvals for trainers and dogs seeking working-dog certification.

The Committee is currently developing a series of training textbooks, ranging from basic at-home training guidance to detailed manuals for working-dog trials, in accordance with the International Utility Dog Regulations (FCI-IGP). Uganda's first national FCI-IGP trials are planned for 2026, timed to give trainers and dogs enough preparation before competing.

Membership and Disciplinary Committee

The Committee is responsible for developing and growing CAU's membership, setting and maintaining membership standards, and managing relations with members. This includes recruiting and onboarding new members, supporting the formation of new clubs, vetting membership applications, conducting kennel inspections, monitoring and promoting compliance with CAU's standards, and ensuring members receive the benefits of their membership.

The Committee also handles member support, dispute management, and disciplinary matters, including determining penalties where appropriate.

Sponsorship and Events Committee

The Committee is in charge of planning all of CAU's shows and events, considering event relevance, event grounds, and coordinating with clubs and sponsors to provide the best solutions for all.

The Committee solicits sponsorship from organisations and individuals whose activities complement CAU's mission and vision.

Publicity Committee

The Committee is in charge of developing communication strategies, publicity, and media presence. It develops and produces ideas that will further the cause, vision, and mission of CAU.

Finance and Legal Committee

The Committee oversees the income and expenditure of the Association. It is in charge of preparing all documentation for periodic reports and the AGM, and all legal requirements of the Association.

The Committee coordinates reporting activities with the Chairman of the Board and CAU's appointed auditors.
